Of the BNHS Band
Michael Moore
Band Director – Michael Moore is in his 13th year teaching at Byron Nelson HS and 3rd year as Director of Bands. His duties include teaching the Wind Ensemble, Concert Band 1, Marching Band, Jazz Band, co-teaching the Symphony Orchestra and assisting with the Symphonic Band, Concert Band 2 and Philharmonic Orchestra. His groups have been awarded multiple UIL Sweepstakes and Best-In-Class awards among other accolades. Mr. Moore graduated Cum Laude with his Bachelor of Music Education from Texas Christian University in 2011. During his time at TCU he studied Clarinet with Gary Whitman and Victoria Luperi. He was a four-year member of the Wind Symphony, Principal Clarinet of the Symphony Orchestra, as well as a Section Leader of the Horned Frog Marching Band.
Mr. Moore currently resides in Roanoke, Texas with his wife Anna Lee, daughters Harper and Hazel, and Australian Shepherds, Jax and Harley. When he is not teaching, he enjoys cooking, attempting to play golf, watching movies and spending time with family and friends.
Mr. Moore’s professional affiliations include the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Jazz Educators Association and Kappa Kappa Psi.

John Bingaman
Associate Band Director – John Bingaman also serves as Director of Percussion Studies at Byron Nelson High School in Trophy Club, Texas. His drumlines have achieved high placements at the HEB, Plano, and Lonestar Drumline Contests. Prior to his appointment at Byron Nelson High School, John was the percussion director at John Horn High School where they placed third at the 2012 Percussive Arts Society Marching Percussion Festival in the standstill division. Mr. Bingaman’s students have made the Texas All-State band consistently with two as recently as 2021.
Mr. Bingaman holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the University of Louisiana at Monroe. John performed with the Monroe Symphony Orchestra for five seasons and then played thirteen seasons as a percussionist with the Allen Philharmonic Orchestra. John was featured as a soloist with the orchestra by performing a marimba concerto in 2004. He is also an active percussionist, drumset player, adjudicator, and clinician in the DFW area serving on staffs such as the “Roll” Models Percussion Summer Camps and the North Texas Middle School Percussion Camp. Mr. Bingaman, an educational artist for Mapex/Majestic, has also presented percussion clinics at the 2019 TMEA convention, 2021 Art of Teaching Music Symposium, 2021 Stryvemind Director Symposium, and the 2021 Texas Bandmasters Association Convention.

Rothman Tafel
Assistant Band Director - Rothman Tafel is in his 8th year teaching and 3rd as Assistant Band Director at Byron Nelson High School. Prior to joining the Byron Nelson Band, he taught for three years at one of Byron’s feeders Tidwell Middle School and two years at Sulphur Springs Middle School. Mr. Tafel teaches the Byron Nelson Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Concert Band and assists in teaching the Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band. Mr. Tafel graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s in Music Education from the University of North Texas where he studied Clarinet with Deborah Fabian.
Mr. Tafel has been active in the Drum Corps activity where he marched Baritone with organizations such as Forte, The Academy and the Santa Clara Vanguard. He has also taught visual with the Guardians and brass with the Phantom Regiment.
Mr. Tafel resides in Denton, Texas with his wife Emily and their two cats Lily and Oli. He enjoys playing golf with fellow band directors and arranging music.

Kevin Lopez
Colorguard Director - Kevin Lopez, is entering his 7th year at Byron Nelson HS. This will be his 3rd year as Director. He has been heavily involved in the marching arts for over 18 years. He has performed with the Riverside City College Marching Band, Fantasia Winter Guard, and the Santa Clara Vanguard Winter Guard. At SCV, Mr. Lopez became an Independent World Class Champion.
Mr. Lopez started his career as a visual designer, choreographer, and Color Guard instructor in 2009 where he worked with several ensembles across Southern California. Before moving across the country, Lopez spent most of his time teaching at Sultana High School in Hesperia California, where he directed from 2012-2018. He has also worked and consulted with several ensembles who have competed in BOA, DCI, and WGI.
